Auguste LELOIR (1809-1892) Portrait of a civil servant or a member of the prefectural corps in uniform, knight of the Legion of Honor Oil on canvas signed and dated 1835 lower right. 82 x 65,5 cm. Gilt frame (chips). Auguste Leloir (1809-1892) Auguste Leloir was the husband of the watercolorist Héloïse Colin (1820-1874), the father of the painter Alexandre-Louis Leloir and the illustrator Maurice Leloir, and the uncle of Édouard Toudouze. Crowned with a 3rd Grand Prix de Rome in 1835, Auguste Leloir began exhibiting at the Salon the same year (a portrait of Madame C...) and was rewarded twice, obtaining a 3rd class medal at the Salon of 1839, then a 2nd class medal at the Salon of 1841 for his painting of Homer, bought by the State and deposited in the Louvre Museum. He produced a body of work as a history painter, author of paintings on religious and mythological subjects. He also practiced the art of portraiture, as here.
