There is a second preparatory drawing in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Copenhagen Iconography: Simon Butler (1755-1836) was one of the pioneers of Kentucky and Ohio. Opposed to the Indians during the constant wars, Butler was taken prisoner. His ordeal took place in 1778-1779, during which he was tied to a wild horse that, frightened by the Indians, undertook a crazy race in the woods. Almost dead, Butler was brought back to the Indian camps. He later managed to escape.
