Gilded metal otter statuette based on an ancient Egyptian mo - Lot 287
Gilded metal otter statuette based on an ancient Egyptian model (664-30 B.C.) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 45 cm high (minor restoration) Otters were depicted in bronze statuettes such as this one, standing with their front paws raised atop small bronze boxes in the late Ptolemaic period. The pose of raised paws signifies the otter's worship of the sun god as he rises in the morning. In myth, otters were attached to the Lower Egyptian goddess Ouadjet, whose cult was centered at Buto in the northern delta.
