A square-backed armchair, the armrests rest on swan wings th - Lot 180
A square-backed armchair, the armrests rest on swan wings that curve to follow the movement of the head of the animal whose beak rests on the base of its neck. Decorated with friezes and palmettes on the seat and upper backrest band. The front feet are lion paws and the hind feet are sabre-shaped. Mark of the Tuileries under the Restoration (three fleurs-de-lis in an oval) and the capital letters TH. Inventory number: 9809 and 425 Attributed to Pierre Marcion. Circa 1800 / 1810 H.91 cm x W.58 cm History: According to inventory marks, this armchair was at the Grand Trianon during the Empire and then at the Tuileries castle during the Restoration. In 1806 armchairs and sofas with swan feet were delivered for the salon of the Emperor's small apartments in St Cloud . This is the closest swan model to this one: the beak comes to rest at the base of the animal's neck. Swans can be found on Josephine's famous armchairs kept in Malmaison. In 1802, Mrs Bonaparte (Pauline) also ordered armchairs with this decoration. The same goes for Eugène who ordered monumental swan armchairs for the Hôtel de Beauharnais. The wings of the swans support the armrests of the armrests. Sources and bibliography: J.P. Samoyault, Mobilier français. Consulate and Empire.
