HEINSIUS Johann - Ernst (Hidburghausen 1740- Orléans1812) Portrait of Anne Rose DEBAS, general DELAROCHE playing the harp Oil on canvas, signed and dated top left " heinsius pinxit 1806 " Re-enlisted. Original frame in wood and gilded stucco 117 cm x 89 cm. Biography : Jean-Baptiste Grégoire DELAROCHE : At less than seventeen years old, he embarked on his father's ship without the knowledge of his family and on September 1st 1784 he signed his voluntary enlistment in the 22nd line infantry regiment. After various adventures, including at the battle of Valmy, on 1 May 1793 he obtained the rank of captain in the 9th hussar for the courage he had displayed on the previous 6 March in a battle fought under the walls of Liège by the "Dampierre" division. He was wounded on this occasion when he rallied the vanguard for a moment in disarray and took back two guns from the enemy. It is also to his conduct at the siege of Kortrijk that he owes his appointment as brigade commander of the sixth regiment of hussars on the 11th Nivôse year III. A few days later, while swimming the "Lily" under enemy fire, he was wounded again. Sent in the year IV to the Army of the Rhine, he continues to give evidence of a rare intrepidity. For all these facts, "HOCHE" wants to honour this trait of audacity and devotion by proposing DELAROCHE for the rank of brigadier general, but this one, as modest as brave, prefers to remain at the head of his regiment with which he makes the campaign of year VI with the army Sambre et Meuse. He distinguishes himself on the 16 germinal Year VI with the Italian army in front of Verona, by a most brilliant charge which clears a battalion enveloped by two regiments of heavy cavalry. But, promoted to brigadier general on the 22nd messidor year VII, his wounds force him at the beginning of year IX to leave the active service, but BONAPARTE sends him in the department of Eure, which then desolate bands of brigands, which affect to give to their depredations a political color, by robbing public coffers and stagecoaches. Delaroche, through energetic measures, quickly managed to put an end to these excesses. He was made a knight, then an officer of the Legion of Honour on the 19th frimaire and 25th prairial in the year XII. In 1806, he served in the army of the north and commanded a brigade of light cavalry during the Polish campaign in 1807, and on his return to France he was assigned to the 7th military division in Grenoble. Raised to the rank of Major General on 2 February 1808 and baron d'empire by decree of 9 March 1808 and letters patent of 9 December 1809, the Minister of War placed the Bayonne cavalry depot under his orders on 27 October. In 1809, while the army was occupying Vienna, his division was called to Germany to protect a line from Regensburg to Bayreuth against the devastation of General Keinmayer's Austrian and Tyrolean partisans, a line extending from Regensburg to Bayreuth. In this circumstance he saved Nuremberg from looting, by driving a column of these undisciplined troops out of the city. On 9 November of the same year, he resumed his command in the 7th military division, which he occupied until 8 April 1814, when Marshal Augereau entrusted him with the command of the 19th division (Lyon). At the time of the "Hundred Days", he was called by Napoleon jointly with Generals LOISON, MOLITOR, SEBASTIANI to the organization of the National Guards of France. At the second Restoration, he was included by seniority of service among the forty generals of the old army admitted to retirement pay from 1 st January 1816 and bore the title of Lieutenant L'EMPIRE À FONTAINEBLEAU 146 MONDAY 22nd MARCH 2021 General of the King's armies. Appointed "Knight of Saint Louis" on 19 July of the same year and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour on 14 February 1815, and Knight of the Bavarian Order of Military Merit. He was admitted to retirement on 6 October 1815. He died on 27 April 1845 at the castle of "SELORE" in Saint-Yan (Saône et Loire). He married Rose Anne DEBAS, daughter of Jean Jacques DEBAS, the king's farmer and then Adjutant-General, on 22 September 1802 in Evreux.
