JOACHIM MURAT Oval snuffbox in Egyptian agate, marbled and translucent. Gold frame, with palmette opening tab. Lid decorated with a chalcedony cameo with the profile of Joachim MURAT in general's uniform attributed to Saveria de Simoni, circled in gold with stylized frieze decoration. Bears the inventory number n°208 of the collections of the Princes Murat. Dim : 8,1 x 5 x Ht 2,5 cm. B.E. Consulate period - Empire. Provenance : - Christie's London Egyptian Hall sale, 26 June 1845, lot 399. -Sale Collection of Mrs S.A. Evans, from the collection of her husband Charles Barro de Hygrove Ney, December 1st 1904, lot 192. -Bought by Prince Murat at this sale. -Remained in her lineage. History: According to the family tradition, this snuffbox would be made of an agate found in Egypt, just after the Battle of the Pyramids in 1798. The snuffbox would have been offered by Napoleon to Joachim Murat for his wedding.
