Georges ROUGET (1783-1869) Coronation of Emperor Napoleon I at Notre Dame, December 2, 1804 Ink, watercolor and gouache on paper signed lower left " G.R. An XIII " Formerly mounted on cardboard, bears an inscription on the back in pencil " the coronation of Napoleon I school of David, Rouget " Rare gilt bronze frame with palmette decoration. B.E. Drawing: 28 x 22 cm With frame: 47 x 32 cm Biography: A student of David, after studying at the School of Fine Arts, he entered his studio in 1797 and very quickly became his favourite disciple. Rouget began his professional career as his master's principal assistant until his master's exile in Brussels. In 1803 he failed three times to win the Second Grand Prix de Rome, but was not awarded the First Grand Prix. A minor painter, he will make his entire career by creating for the different regimes he serves, paintings relating the great hours of French history. Several of his paintings adorn the historical museum of the Palace of Versailles inaugurated by Louis-Philippe in 1837. He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. He collaborated on the following paintings: Bonaparte crossing the Great Saint Bernard, The Rite of Napoleon, of which he made a copy signed by David, Leonidas at Thermopylae. He made several paintings for the imperial power including: The Marriage of Napoleon and Marie-Louise in 1811.
