SÈVRES A hard porcelain plate from the entrance service with - Lot 149
SÈVRES A hard porcelain plate from the entrance service with a pale blue swan background in gold, with gold decoration in the centre of a rosette surrounded by six palmettes and on the wing in gold enhanced with swan brown around a fountain in three rectangular reserves on a green background and framed by gold palmettes on a pale blue background adorned with gold masks in lozenges on a green background flanked by two flowering stems, the rim outlined with two rows of purple pearls and gold fillets. Marked: M. Imple de Sevres = in red. Empire period, year XIV, 1805-1806. D. 23,5 cm. Restored sparkle on the edge and gold wear. Provenance : Delivered on 15 brumaire year XIV (6 november 1805) by order of Empress Josephine to her Imperial Highness Princess Borghese, Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. The service, whose decoration is described on a pale blue background with swans and gold heads raised in brown on a bronze background, entered the shop of the Sèvres manufactory on the 1st Vendémiaire of the year XIV (23rd September 1805). It was delivered on 15 brumaire year XIV (6 November 1805) by order of Empress Josephine to Her Imperial Highness Princess Borghese, Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. It was divided into an entrance service of 132 pieces comprising 72 flat plates at 55 francs each and a dessert service of 108 pieces also comprising 72 flat plates at 70 francs each, a difference justified by the presence of a cameo portrait in the centre of the latter. A supplement of 76 pieces was delivered on 29 September 1806 comprising 48 dinner plates to complete the starter service (Archives, Cité de la céramique, Sèvres and Limoges, Vbb2, f° 15 and 59). Two plates and a cup from Princess Pauline Borghese's service are illustrated in Napoleon I and Sèvres, L'art de la porcelaine au service de l'Empire, collective work under the direction of Camille Le Prince, Paris, 2016, p. 260.
