History: The Duchess of Bassano, Lady of Honour of the Empress, received this insignia on 28th August 1864, for her charitable works. This order was very important at the Imperial Court because it was one of the only ones that could be received and worn by women. Thus it is worth noting that Empress Eugenie wears this order on her officer portrait by Winterhalter. Her insignia is kept nowadays in Compiègne. Biography: Marie-Ghislaine, Pauline van der Linden d'Hooghvorst (1814-1867), Duchess of Bassano. She was the daughter of General Emmanuel van der Linden d'Hooghvorst (1781-1866). Lady in waiting of Empress Eugenie. She was involved in many charitable works. She was vice-president of the maternal society of Paris and a member of the central committee for the patronage of asylum halls. She was seen as a Flemish woman of robust health, not liking bad education. She was in charge of the ladies of the Palace. In 1843 she had married Napoleon-Joseph-Hugues Maret, 2nd Duke of Bassano (1803- 1898). She died during the Second Empire, still young, and was replaced in her functions by Countess Walewska.
