Daniel SAINT (1778-1847) Wearing the Empress Josephine with - Lot 115
Daniel SAINT (1778-1847) Wearing the Empress Josephine with her exceptional and rare pearl set Exceptional and rare oval miniature on ivory, in a medallion pendant encircled with small pearls 1st Empire period. In its red morocco case with the gilded iron inscription "Donated by the Empress EUGENIE" B.E. Height: 5.5 cm Biography: Daniel SAINT is considered one of the greatest French miniaturists of the 19th century. Born in Saint-Lô in 1778. He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault (School of David) then of Augustin and Aubry. He painted many portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon I, Queen Hortense), the sovereigns of the Restoration (Prince Eugène) and the July Monarchy (Charles X). He returned to Saint-Lô in 1842 where he died in 1847. The town's Fine Arts Museum has a few copies of his works. Departing from Isabey's method of dotting and Augustine's method of glazing, following the example of Aubry, he used hatching, thus obtaining effects of vigour in the tones and relief in the model.
