Rectangular snuffbox of concave shape, made of marbled tortoiseshell which would have been given by Emperor Napoleon I. Silver frame. Accompanied inside by a handwritten note with a wax seal "Emperor's nursing home. 1st doctor": "This snuff box was a gift from Napoleon I to doctor Bouvenot from Arbois, who was a doctor in the Emperor's house, and lastly to Queen Hortense. The stamp was that of Bouvenot. This doctor gave this snuff box to his friend Mr Hédiard, from Sens, while he was a student in Paris, where he was staying. M. Hédiard, born in 1807, was an engineer and an inventor of some notoriety. He died in the street in 1876, after having been frustrated by the benefit of remarkable inventions. This snuff box was sold on July 8, 1921 by Miss Lucie Sigonney, whose mother had recovered Mr. Hédiard's furniture in recognition of the care she had given him with the utmost devotion. Provenance: Monte Carlo Auction House, February 17, 2018, lot 440 Biography: Louis-Pierre Bouvenot (1746-1833) was born in Arbois, he was first a soldier and then vicar of the Metropolitan Bishop of the East. Arrested in 1796 as a member of a conspiracy in favour of the Prince de Condé, he took refuge in Paris near Corvisart, who encouraged him to study medicine. He appears in the Imperial Almanac of 1813 as a doctor, member of the Paris Academy of Medicine. When Corvisart, whose friend he was, died, he left for Sens where he practised until his death in 1833.
