from Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) The Plum Tree Garden in Kameido , Japan - Print from the series "The Hundred Views of Edo" - 40x26.6 cm This is one of the most famous plates of the series. The garden belongs to the Kameido Tenjinsha Shrine and the plum tree depicted was famous for its unusual shape. Known as Garyuume ("dragon at rest"), it appears in all the Edo guides but was unfortunately washed away during a flood in 1910. It is written in the List of Famous Places in Edo: "He really looks like a dragon on the ground. The branches intertwine and seem to turn into a new trunk. The tree extends to the right and left. The aroma of the flowers makes one forget the aroma of orchids, the luminous white of the flowers huddled together carries away the evening. "Vincent van Gogh made a copy of this painting in 1887 under the title Japonaiseries. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese draughtsman, engraver and painter. Prolific author, active between 1818 and 1858, he created a body of work consisting of more than 5,400 prints. Along with Hokusai, he is one of the last great names in printmaking, and in particular landscape printmaking, in Japan.
