after - Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa, Japan - Print from the "One Hundred Views of Edo" series - Sheet size: 26.5 x 39.6 cm The famous Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa, dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit), was the most popular and venerable Buddhist temple in the Edo period. Here, the white of the snow is complemented by the reds of the temple buildings, the door, the large lantern and even the signed label painted by Hiroshige in the lower right corner. The propitious play of colours, red and white, creates a festive atmosphere. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese draftsman, engraver and painter. Prolific author, active between 1818 and 1858, he created a body of work consisting of more than 5,400 prints. Along with Hokusai, he is one of the last great names in printmaking, and in particular landscape printmaking, in Japan.
