from - Kitagawa Utamaro I (1753 - 1806) Small quarrel, Japan - Lot 81
from - Kitagawa Utamaro I (1753 - 1806) Small quarrel, Japan - Print from the series : Seven Komachi in fashion - 40.2cm x 26.6cm period : the 60s - This print is an allusion to a poem that the emperor Yozei had written for the poet Ono no Komachi (834-900) and asked her to send a poetic reply. This prompted her to change a single word of the poem and send it back - because by that time she had withdrawn from the world. Utamaro parodies this so-called copying episode, depicting two women who are obviously fighting with each other, using the same words. Kitagawa Utamaro was an active print painter during the Kansei era (1789-1801), considered to be the golden age of printmaking. He painted many portraits of beautiful women.
