19th century FRENCH SCHOOL after Claude Michel... - Lot 58 - Osenat
19th century FRENCH SCHOOL after Claude Michel dit Clodion (1738-1814) Satyress playing with a satyr child Terracotta medallion Label and letter with a wax stamp on the reverse Diam. 31 cm, in a painted wooden frame Attached is a letter dated 1924 and signed by M. Belval Original related work: -Claude Michel dit Clodion, Satyresse jouer avec un satyre enfant, de côté et d'autre d'une guirlande ayant entouré un oeil-de-bœuf, 1782, stucco bas-relief, H. 202 x L.410 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. R.F.3424. Related literature: -Anne Poulet, Guilhem Scherf, Clodion, 1738-1814, Paris, Réunion des musées nationaux, 1992, model listed under n°39, pp.213-215. This medallion reproduces the right part of an element of the decoration originally located in the main courtyard of the Hôtel de Bourbon-Condé in Paris built from 1780. The original terracotta model was sold on 22 March 1792 during the auction of the Brongniart collection, architect of the Hôtel de Bourbon-Condé and friend of Clodion. The subject, much appreciated by the public, was declined throughout the 19th century in numerous versions in terracotta, plaster, marble and bronze. Although the medallion is accompanied by a certificate from the Belval expert dated December 12, 1924 giving the work to Clodion, the progress of knowledge about the sculptor's work allows us today to rule out his authorship. Let us underline the remarkable provenance of this copy which was kept in the former Perrin de Brichambaut collection. The work was acquired by this family on October 8, 1924 during the sale of Mr. Guillaumont's estate, at which time Mr. Guillaumont's estate was sold to the family. Belval was an expert. The medallion was then kept at the Château d'Art sur Meurthe, built at the beginning of the second half of the 18th century by the widow of Count Claude-Joseph Aubertin de Juvrecourt, then occupied by the Perrin de Brichambaut family from 1910 to 1935 approximately. The family is particularly well known for Pierre Perrin de Brichambaut's career as an Air Force officer during the First World War.
