CHAIN OF HAIR OF THE EMPEROR. Fine necklace made of a twist - Lot 220
CHAIN OF HAIR OF THE EMPEROR. Fine necklace made of a twist of gold wire and hair. Gold clasp punched ram's head (1819-1838). Total length: 66 cm. Contained in a bistre paper annotated in pen probably by the 2nd Duke of Bassano "Hair chain of the Emperor. It belonged to my mother. "Provenance: -Marie-Madelaine Lejéas-Carpentier wife Maret, 1st Duchess of Bassano. Descendants of the Dukes of Bassano. History: At St. Helena, the Emperor had only two watches, thus designated, in the Inventory of April 16: "Two watches of the Emperor in gold, one with a hair chain of Empress Marie-Louise, a small seal with a crowned N, the other without chain or seal. "The Emperor bequeathed them to his son and ordered Marchand to have a chain made in Paris from his hair for the second watch, so that it could be passed on to his son. The hair chains were assembled by jewellers after having been worked by a specialist (one can guess that this task must have been particularly tedious for men's hair). This type of chain was very popular with the Bonaparte family, as Elisa had her hairdresser send her hair cut off: "I have the honour of sending you a bundle of His Highness's hair which I would ask you to have spun into three pieces, namely one piece four fathoms long and two bracelets one fathom long. "Lucien Bonaparte also wore a hair chain Bibliography: Lesja VANDENSANDE (dir), "Napoleon and the jewels of the Empire", Fonds Mercator, 2010, on hair chains, p.118 to 122. CHAIN MADE FROM NAPOLEON'S HAIR ENTWINED HAIR AND GOLD THREAD
