PRECIOUS SOUVENIR OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON I. Tongue scraper of E - Lot 216
PRECIOUS SOUVENIR OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON I. Tongue scraper of Emperor Napoleon by Gal Montholon. In gilt, 16 cm long and 6 mm wide. Traces of oxidation. Presented wrapped in a paper with annotation in pen transcribed above. Provenance: Descendants of the Dukes of Bassano. History: At the death of the Emperor, the Grand Marshal was given the campaign kit known as "grand nécessaire de vermeil", to be given to the King of Rome. It is known that he could not give it to him before the death of the young man in 1832. It was finally entrusted to King Louis Philippe who had it deposited with the City of Paris. From this kit, kept in the Carnavalet Museum, were extracted some pieces kept by Bertrand, among which the toothpaste and a perfume bottle. It is quite possible that Montholon also retrieved some pieces, including the tongue scraper, from this exceptional object. Bibliography: Napoleon à Sainte Hélène, la conquête de la mémoire, Gallimard, 2016, p.215, fig.135. NAPOLEON'S TONGUE-SCRAPER LATER OWNED BY GENERAL MONTHOLON
