A) BATISTE STRIP STAINED WITH THE BLOOD OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON - Lot 212
A) BATISTE STRIP STAINED WITH THE BLOOD OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON I., USED DURING HIS AUTOPSY. Tied with a thread. Accompanied by a handwritten note with a mourning border, annotated in the hand of the 2nd Duke of Bassano authenticating this souvenir and the following two: "This small white silk bag contains hair of H.M. the Emperor Napoleon I, a handkerchief, marked with his number, having belonged to him and a band stained with his blood during his autopsy. These precious objects were given to my Father by General de Montholon on his return from St Helena. Duke of Bassano. 20th October 1875. "Provenance: Descendants of the Dukes of Bassano. History: These three souvenirs were given by General de Montholon, one of the last companions of Napoleon's exile, to Bernard Hugues Maret, 1st Duke of Bassano. Montholon and Maret were close friends and the latter was a close friend of Sémonville, Montholon's adoptive father. The blood-stained strip is reminiscent of Achille Archambault's memorabilia offered for sale in 2014, it is the memorabilia of the last members of the Emperor's suite during captivity. The strips used during the autopsy must, like those used during Napoleon's illness, have come from the Emperor's torn shirts used for the patient. The Emperor's autopsy was performed on the 6th May at 2pm by Antommarchi, assisted by seven British doctors. Montholon attended, along with the Emperor's two other executors, Bertrand and Marchand. Montholon was opposed to the opening of the skull. BAND OF CAMBRIC STAINED WITH NAPOLEON'S BLOOD, USED DURING HIS AUTOPSY
