VINCENZO VELA, AFTER. Last moments of the Emperor Napoleon I - Lot 204
VINCENZO VELA, AFTER. Last moments of the Emperor Napoleon I in Saint Helena. Bronze with brown patina. Stamp of mechanical reduction Colas. 17 x Ht. 20 cm. B.E. History: The sculpture "Last moments of the Emperor Napoleon I in St. Helena" is presented at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1867. He received the prize of honour. This work was very well received as Ernest Cheneau's article testifies "the public was captivated by the interest of the motif, full of such deep emotion. They also studied with curiosity the tricks of the practitioner who had the patience to sculpt in trompe l'oeil a woollen blanket thrown over the knees of the dying emperor and the laces that fall on his chest and hands". This sculpture was acquired by Napoleon III. It was reduced in bronze in four different sizes by Bardedienne. VINCENZO VELA (AFTER) NAPOLEON'S FINAL MOMENTS ON ST HELENA BRONZE
