Presented with an old sales note from the beginning of the 20th century and its handwritten attestation (1894), with notarized stamp of Harry Franz in Philadelphia : " This is to certify that our father Joseph Archambault accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte to St. Helena and was subsequently sent away with three others to the Cape of Good Hope. When he left, he was presented by the Emperor with several souvenirs, among them a pair of fine, long white silk stockings with a crown wrought into the side. They are in a state of excellent preservation. The stockings have never been out of our possession, since they were given to our father in 1815, and have consequently been in our own family nearly eighty years. They have been frequently shown to distinguished persons, among them Joseph Bonaparte and General Bertrand. We consider these stockings, a valuable addition to any collection of Napoleon relics. Napoleon B. Archambault (owner) 3032 Girard Avenue Achille Lucien Archambault 426 So. 40th St. February 3, 1894 " We certify that our father Joseph Archambault accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte to St. Helena and was then sent back with three others to the Cape of Good Hope. On his departure, the emperor presented him with several souvenirs, among them a pair of long, thin white silk stockings with an embroidered crown on the side. They are in an excellent state of preservation. The stockings have never been out of our possession, as they were given to our father in 1815, and have consequently been in our own family nearly eighty years. They have been frequently shown to distinguished persons, among whom were Joseph Bonaparte and General Bertrand. We consider these stockings a valuable addition to any collection of Napoleon's relics. "History: Ali notes in his memoirs that the Emperor wore silk stockings bearing the imperial crown. Ours bear the imperial crown on the embroidered rod, others were embroidered with daylight or red (sometimes black) silk threads on the upper border. Biography: Joseph Olivier Victor (Senez) Archambault, Achille's younger brother, was born on 14 Prairial An 4, that is to say on 2 June 1796, in Fontainebleau. His birth certificate, established three days later, indicates that he was the son of Magdelaine Archambault and that she declared that the child "came from the works of citizen Thomas Nicolas Sénez", with whom she was domiciled "rue de Méry". At the age of 11, he was assigned with his elder brother Achille to the imperial stables and it is in Saint-Cloud that he received the education necessary for his future position. Assigned to St Helena with his brother Achille, in the service of the Emperor, Joseph was separated from them in 1816 and sent back on Hudson Lowe's orders. Once back in England in the spring of 1817, Joseph set about fulfilling the mission assigned to him by Napoleon, that of getting to Joseph Bonaparte as soon as possible. Settled and married in Pennsylvania, the youngest Archambault did not see his brother again until 1856 during a trip. Proof of an extraordinary destiny, the one who had known the exile of Napoleon, will fight during the Civil War as a Major in a cavalry regiment. He died in 1874. His children, two of whom are mentioned in the stocking attestation, had names in reference to France: Achille (like his brother), Lafayette, Napoleon and Josephine.
