NAPOLEON I. Autograph manuscript (1 column) and manuscript dictated to the grand marshal Henri-Gatien BERTRAND (1 column 1/2 in-16). Longwood on the island of Saint Helena. With 2 later signed autograph apostilles by the same Bertrand (a few words). On an oblong in-8 fragment extracted from a folio, yellowed paper, modern restorations on a cut corner and a small marginal tear, with damage to several words in Henri-Gatien Bertrand's hand. Precious manuscript written in St. Helena, preparatory to the passage of his memoirs devoted to the Egyptian expedition In his hand, the emperor established a chronology of the great ancient "epochs" of Egyptian history: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 epochs until the conquest by the Persians - 4 the Persians - 4 the... Greeks - 4 the Romans - 4 the Late Empire until the Hegira - 6 until [the] Fatimid caliphs... "Napoleon I also dictated here to Grand Marshal Bertrand a note on SCIENTIFIC WORK ON THE FLOW OF THE NIL, DONE BY FRENCH ENGINEERS. On the front: "On 29 ventôse year 7 [19 March 1799], [Pierre-Simon] Girard, chief engineer of the Ponts-et-chaussées with 3 ing[génieur]s, left for H[au]te-É[gypte] to study the Nile. "On the reverse: "3 submitted experiments made between... [and] Bénisouef, and the other 2 at... [at] the time when the waters were the lowest, proved that its expenditure... was 782 cubic meters per second, it would be 9 f[ois] more considerable, or 6924 cubic meters in high water. "Later, Grand Marshal Bertrand authenticated the emperor's handwriting with his own hand and assured that the rest was dictated to him by the emperor.
