Provenance: Maître OSENAT, " L'Empire à Fontainebleau ", 8 November 2009, lot 500. History: Traditional object of popular art of St. Helena, this necklace of acacia seeds comes from a daughter of Captain James BENETT of the Regiment of St. Helena who would have provided a mahogany table to make the coffin of the Emperor. BENETT had three daughters: - Eliza, married to a governor Sir Patrick ROSS. She was soon widowed and lived on the island for the rest of her life. - Julia, returned to England. - Ellen BENETT married to Captain OWENS, who attended Napoleon's funeral in her mother's arms. She was also alive at the beginning of the 20th century. Bibliography: Colin FOX, "The Bennett Letters, a 19th Century family in St Helena, England and the Cape", Choir Press.
