[REICHSTADT (NAPOLEON FRANÇOIS CHARLES JOSEPH BONAPARTE, DUC - Lot 119
[REICHSTADT (NAPOLEON FRANÇOIS CHARLES JOSEPH BONAPARTE, DUC DE)]. HARTMANN-KLARSTEIN (Procop). Draft, probably autograph, of 3 letters, February-March 1832, including one to the former Empress Marie-Louise, then Duchess of Parma. In all, 2 pp. in-folio. To Marie-Louise. Vienna, 21 February 1832. "Your Majesty... My lord the duke of Reichstadt continues to advance on the road to convalescence but a little slowly since the cervical cold which joined the rest of the cathartic affection which did not disappear yet completely requires that the prince spares himself some more time, this is why Mr. de Malfatti [Giovanni Malfatti, physician to the Austrian Court] cannot consent to the Prince going to the balls held in town, but he does not prevent him from attending the Court balls, without however dancing, or from going to the town theatre and taking a few hours' walk every day, either by car or on foot, especially as the fine weather we are having at the moment encourages this. The prince is submitting to the sacrifices imposed on him by his illness in a better manner than one would expect at his age. Your Majesty therefore deigns to have no worries, since the Prince is doing as well as he can after this serious illness. The letter which she kindly addressed to him the other day gave him great pleasure and I believe I can assure him that... his letters have a very good effect on the prince in every respect... "The Duke of Reichstadt, son of Napoleon I and Marie-Louise, was suffering from tuberculosis: he made his last sortie at the head of his battalion on 16 January 1832 and, badly treated, was carried off by the disease on 22 July 1832. MILITARY GOVERNOR TO THE DUKE OF REICHSTADT, COUNT OF HARTMANN-KLARSTEIN (1787-1868) had served in the Napoleonic Wars from 1805 to 1815. He was appointed to the Duke of Reichstadt in October 1830 (when the latter, having been emancipated, began a military career) and effectively fulfilled his duties from June 1831 until the prince's death. He was subsequently promoted to major general and commander of the army.
