QUEEN HORTENSE (1783-1837) AND AUGUSTE-SIMEON... - Lot 99 - Osenat
QUEEN HORTENSE (1783-1837) AND AUGUSTE-SIMEON GARNERAY (1785-1824) Self portrait of Queen Hortense. Fine watercolor drawing. In bust, in a crown of immortals and violets. Marked lower right "Hortense Augsbourg 1818". Circled with brass. Under glass. Wood and gilded stucco frame. Diameter 13 cm. History: At the fall of the empire begins for Hortense an odyssey which obliges her to leave definitively the castle of Saint leu, to take refuge in Switzerland. In 1817, she acquires the castle of Arenenberg, on the banks of the Lake of Constance. She divided her time between her house in Augsburg, Bavaria in the winter and Arenenberg in the summer. Hortense drew and painted a lot from 1815 to 1837, sometimes with the help of Garneray. An English lady who visited the Queen around 1830 wrote: "There was a whole series of small portraits delicately touched in watercolour, whose resemblance was striking, then views, no less accurately taken, of the sites the Queen had crossed, of the apartments she had inhabited, and these drawings would have, it seems, by their fidelity and their pleasure, honoured the most skilful of amateurs", but many of these works are anonymous, most of them are dispersed abroad and it seems that very few have been engraved. An exception must be made for a curious portrait of Napoleon whose authenticity is not in doubt, as it is signed: Hortense del. Augsbourg 1822 (Note the similarity of the signature). Without being a perfect drawing, this lithograph has a very personal accent and the head, although reminiscent of a certain miniature by Isabey, gives a very particular impression of resemblance. Related work: Our drawing is close to the portrait of Hortense by Isabey.
