PARIS Rare hard porcelain biscuit bust representing the Empr - Lot 91
PARIS Rare hard porcelain biscuit bust representing the Empress Josephine after Joseph Chinard's bust, wearing a crown, her dress decorated with a star and a face of love between petals, on a square base. Attributed to the Nast factory. Empire period, circa 1806. H. 25,5 cm. Restoration on the top of the crown and on an epaulette of the dress, chips on the corners of the base. This bust is directly inspired by the bust of Josephine commissioned by the Empress to Joseph Chinard for Malmaison, sculpted by him around 1805 and of which he made several copies exhibited at the 1806 and 1808 Salons. A marble version and another in terracotta are kept at the Château de la Malmaison. Another marble bust by Chinard is kept in the Fine Arts Museum of Canada in Ottawa. Another bust in hard porcelain biscuit, similar to ours, is kept in the museum of the Château de la Malmaison where it is attributed to the Nast factory.
