JACQUES LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825) Recto: study... - Lot 83 - Osenat
JACQUES LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825) Recto: study of legs for Pope Pius VII Verso: study of drapery on a pedestal Black pencil 13 x 18 cm cut out at the top Tiled with black pencil On the back, sketch of a hanging on a stele (possibly a study for the prie dieu) . Traces of binding of notebook in the left part. Accompanied by a note in pen "Fragment of a study by David for the portrait of Pius VII in the coronation painting. Provenance: -Detached before David's death from the notebook of the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge (notebook 1943-1815) -Descendants of the Dukes of Bassano. Bibliography: -P. Rosenberg, L.A. Prat, " Jacques Louis David Catalogue raisonné des dessins ", Ed. Leonardo Arte, 2002, T.I, n°211 bis, repr. -S. Laveissière (dir), "Le Sacre de Napoléon par David", 5 continents, 2005, p.98 ff. Related work: - "Study for Pope Pius VII" Folio 12 of sketchbook 8, kept at the Fogg Art Museum. (Rosenberg and Prat opus quoted above n°1651recto) Our drawing is a first study with variants of the legs of Pius VII, for "The Coronation of Josephine". Our sheet comes from a sketchbook, now in the Fogg Art Museum (Rosenberg and Prat opus cit. supra, sketchbook 8, nos. 1641-1671), which is essentially devoted to the "Coronation of Josephine". Several folios of the notebook have been detached, ours probably during David's lifetime, as it does not include the initials of David's sons, which were affixed after their father's death to his drawings in his studio, unlike those preserved in the Fogg notebook. The drawings in Fogg's notebook are all about 23.7 cm x 18 cm, which suggests that our drawing has been cut out, and that the top part of our drawing must exist somewhere. The attitude of the Pope, with his hands on his knees, will not be repeated for the final painting, the Pope blessing the new Emperor, Napoleon having remarked that he had not brought the Pope to France to do nothing...Note that the curule seat on which the Pope is seated is not yet envisaged by David on our sheet, but is already in place on folio 12 of the Fogg's notebook. Presented in conjunction with the Cabinet de Bayser. JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825) TWO GRAPHITE STUDIES
