English neo-classical school circa 1800 The... - Lot 135 - Osenat
English neo-classical school circa 1800 The Sleep of Endymion Bas-relief in marble H.: 20 x W.: 42 cm Related works: -Roman art, early 2nd century BC, Sleeping Endymion, carved wall decoration in relief, carrara marble, H. 157 x W. 103 cm, Rome, Capitoline Museum. This small bas-relief is inspired by a wall panel dating from the Hadrianic period (117-138 CE) discovered on the Aventine Hill in Rome at the beginning of the 18th century. It was then kept in the collection of Cardinal Albani before joining the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Very impressive by its condition and size, it was reproduced life-size and a plaster copy was acquired by the artist John Flaxman, leader of the English neo-classical school from which the author of our bas-relief could have copied it. The casting then entered John Soane's Museum in 1834 (no. M279).
