HORA THIS BENEDICT OF). 2 autograph letters... - Lot 201 - Osenat
HORA THIS BENEDICT OF). 2 autograph letters signed to the widow Tilliard, bookseller rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. Geneva, 21 February 1784 and 26 February 1787. 1 p. 1/2 in-folio, and 2 pp. 1/2 in-4 with address on the back and intaglio stamp in antique style under paper, each of the two documents with a small numbering tab for the collection. Concerning orders for books and maps: " ... I WISH TO PRESENT THE ACADEMY CARDS OF THE ACADEMY OF WHICH I JOIN CY-BACK THE DESIGNATION with the numbers ... I would like them immediately, that is to say, I must receive them before the end of March, otherwise they will be useless to me, because THEY MUST BE USED FOR A TRAVEL WHICH I WILL MAKE ON THE S. OF APRIL. I want them glued on yellow canvas and divided into 6 in length & 3 in height, but without any case, these cases being more inconvenient than useful. I will ask you to join to it the universal & portable Zoology of the abbot Ray [Playcard-Augustin-Fidèle Ray, 1787], and a work of meteorology that Mr. de Luc makes print in this moment in Paris, but of which I am unaware of the title [Ideas on meteorology, of Jean-André de Luc, 1786-1787]. BOTANIST, GEOLOGIST AND SWISS PHYSICIAN HORACEBENEDICT DE SAUSSURE (1740-1799), was the founder of alpine geology with his book Voyages dans les Alpes (1779-1796): he travelled through the Swiss, French and Italian mountains and was the second winner of Mont Blanc. He invented several measuring devices: the first known electrometer, the heliothermometer, the hair hygrometer, the diaphanometer, and the cyanometer to study the transparency and blue of the sky at different altitudes.
