WAGNER (Richard). Autograph letter signed,... - Lot 182 - Osenat
WAGNER (Richard). Autograph letter signed, in French, [to the owner of his apartment at 16 rue Newton in Paris]. Paris, June 23, 1860. 1 p. in-8, tears with small lacks due to opening. "I take the liberty of sending you the bills. I have not counted the locksmith (80 fc), as well as [the] damages I will have to bear because of a move after so little use of my present move. But I think it would be only fair to ask for two thirds of my expenses, since this was calculated for at least 3 years, and I can only stay for one year. Would you be so kind as to let me know when I can expect your kind visit? It's to make you feel at home when you should come. Please accept, dear sir, my deepest thanks for your kind welcome... "Richard Wagner had come to Paris with the aim of earning money by giving concerts, while preparing the public to hear his lyrical works, with a view to obtaining his own theatre and his own company. He lost all measure, rented a beautiful apartment in rue Newton on October 20, 1859 for three years, had it redecorated, took on servants, and held a salon: his "Wednesdays" saw an influx of personalities such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Charles Gounod, Ernest Reyer, Champfleury, Gustave Doré and Jules Ferry. However, he moved out a year later: the noise of the work being carried out in Paris by Baron Haussmann bothered him greatly, and in any case his building was doomed to destruction. He gave three concerts at the beginning of 1860, and, the day after this letter, presented a translation of Tannhäuser by Edmond Roche and Richard Lindau at the Opera, which he had reviewed, but was initially refused. The work would finally be premiered at the Opera in March 1861.
