LISZT (Fra nz). Autograph musical manuscript... - Lot 171 - Osenat
LISZT (Fra nz). Autograph musical manuscript for orchestra and voice. System of 11 staves on a manually adjustable square infolio. Autograph mention in the upper margin: "Correctur Blatt D zur Seite 47" ["Correction sheet D on page 4"]. Fragment in which the Latin text " -ne beati be- " and the German text " -len selig se- " can be read. MANUSCRIPT PROBABLY RELATED TO THE WORK OF COMPOSING THE FUNERAL ODE TO THE DEAD. Franz Liszt lost his son Daniel in 1859, and the following year he composed a funeral ode for orchestra, Les Morts, based on a prose poem by Félicité Robert de La Mennais, each stanza ending with a quotation from the Apocalypse "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord". When his mother died in 1866, he added to this work a male choir of men taking up this quotation in Latin, which he said he heard at that tragic moment.
