BRAHMS (Johannes). Autograph letter signed... - Lot 162 - Osenat
BRAHMS (Johannes). Autograph letter signed "Johannes", in German, to Julius Otto Grimm. "Freitag [Friday]", [Detmold, early October 1858]. 4 pp. in-8, slits in the folds, a small angular spot. IT EVOKES HIS COMPOSITIONS FOR HIS FIRST LOVE, AGATHE VON SIEBOLD. Johannes Brahms had stayed during the summer of 1858 with his friend the composer and conductor Julius Otto Grimm, whom he nicknamed Isegrimm, sometimes abbreviated to Ise (the Isengrin from Renart's novel). It was there that he fell in love with Agathe von Siebold, a beautiful young girl who sang beautifully. He went to Detmold, where he was in the service of the Prince of Lippe as court music teacher and director of the singing society, and wrote an engagement song (Brautgesang) and two Lieder, "Scheiden und Meiden" and "In der Ferne", based on texts from Ludwig Uhland's Wanderlieder - he began these two Lieder with a musical motif in the middle-sixteenth century, E-H-E, meaning "marriage" in German. However, his friend Grimm urged him to declare himself openly to the girl, and he finally did not want to go ahead with it.
