HUGO (Victor). Original drawing. [circa 1870].... - Lot 117 - Osenat
HUGO (Victor). Original drawing. [circa 1870]. Brown ink, pen and wash, 18 x 12.5 cm on an oblong in-4 sheet of grey-blue paper. Autograph caption on an attached sheet, "Drawing by Lady Diana Beauclerk". Joint framed under glass. THE "RAVISSANT" LADY DIANA BEAUCLERK is shown leaning against a console, her face turned away, as if observed from behind (to her right, a second drawing, a simple sketch of a stripped ornamental detail). In a letter dated 17 February 1870, Victor Hugo wrote to his sons: "There are two charming women here [...] The Duchess of Saint-Albans and her daughter Lady Diana Beauclerk, who has taken a charming party for [François-]Victor, if he wanted to get married. Diana de Vere Beauclerk (1842-1905) left a great reputation for beauty. Victor Hugo kept her photographic portrait in one of his notebooks. This drawing appeared in the Victor Hugo exhibition held in 1952 at the National Library (no. 402 in the catalogue) and in the Soleil d'encre exhibition. Manuscripts and drawings by Victor Hugo, organised by the National Library and the City of Paris at the Musée du Petit Palais in 1985-1986 (no. 404 in the catalogue, with reproduction). Provenance: former collection of the painter Jean Hugo, great-grandson of the writer.
