Chest of drawers with rosewood bridge and... - Lot 43 - Osenat
Chest of drawers with rosewood bridge and amourette in the shape of a sarcophagus, curved in the lower part, opening with five drawers, the tray with latticework decoration in polylobate reserves resting on strongly curved uprights finished by very curved feet with clawed hoofs, beautiful ornamentation of gilded bronzes with busts of women and mask of Alexander the Great, with a hollowed mark ""P.M.""" on the reverse. Attributed to François Lieutaud. Louis XV period, circa 1720, H: 85 cm, W: 131 cm, D: 68 cm The same bronze scraps can be found on several pieces of furniture attributed or stamped FL for François Lieutaud, notably a pair of commodes (stamped) now kept at the Residence in Munich, but also on an ebony desk belonging to a small series very similar to each other, one of which, kept at the Residence in Ansbach (Germany), is stamped by François Lieutaud. The so-called "bridge" chests of drawers, i.e. with the lower part hollowed out (or partially hollowed out) in the centre, are relatively rare in the corpus of 18th century furniture, but the particularity of the piece of furniture presented lies more certainly in the narrowing of its template in the lower part, thus evoking the antique sarcophagus. Two other chests of drawers combine both this particular shape and the use of identical female bust scraps, one once belonged to Maria callas (Paris sale, 14 June 1978, lot 128), another was also sold in Paris on 2 and 3 December 1948, lot 200."
