TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD (Charles-Maurice de). Letter signed " ch. mau. talleyrand " as Minister of External Relations, addressed to the chargé d'affaires in Valais, Michel-Ange Bernard Mangourit. Paris, 25 floréal year VI [May 14, 1798]. 1 p. 1/2 in-folio, illustrated letterhead engraved on copper "Le ministre des Relations extérieures". "« ... This consul will tell me if these soldiers are carrying out this order, or if they are rebelling against their rulers [this Valaisan regiment, long in the service of France, had been dismissed in 1792, then re-formed in 1796 in Mayorque in the service of Spain]. I ask you to continue to instigate me, as you do, events that take place before your eyes, or that come to your knowledge. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY STORAGE WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED, the ascendancy that you have been able to gain over the spirits, and the confidence that you have inspired in the Valaisans, are the safeguard of this country. IGNORANCE AND FANATICISM ARE TWO MONSTERS THAT YOU DISARM WITH GENTLENESS AND SKILL. I invite you to continue the same zeal, and the same activity. YOU WILL HAVE PRESERVED THE VALAIS FROM THE WAR'S DISEASES, and well deserved by your Government. Greetings and fraternity... »
