SALICETI (Christophe). Autograph letter signed to the Duke of Padua, General Jean-Toussaint Arrighi de Casanova. Naples, June 3, 1809. 1 p. in-4 "THE VICTORIES OF H.M. THE EMPEROR HAVE ENSURED THE TRANQUILLITY OF ITALY that the beginning of the campaign of the Austrians in the States of Venice had shaken. [Napoleon I had taken Vienna and Prince Eugene had driven the Austrians out of the Veneto.] THE ENGLISH HAD BEEN READY FOR THEIR EXPEDITION TO SICILY FOR A MONTH. The delay in carrying out their plans, the setbacks of their ally, make us presume that they have given up. In any case, THE KING [JOACHIM MURAT] HAS TAKEN MEASURES TO RECEIVE THEM WELL. I am leaving tonight for Rome to meet an extraordinary junta which, by order of H[a] M[ajesty] I[imperial] and R[oyale] will meet there for THE ORGANIZATION OF ROME . I embrace you... " Minister of Police of the Kingdom of Naples, Christophe Saliceti, had just been appointed member of the Consulta which was to take possession of the Papal States after their annexation (May 1809) and organize them into French departments. He was related by marriage to the family of General Arrighi de Casanova, himself a cousin of Napoleon I.
