SANTO DOMINGO. - DESFOURNEAUX (Edme-Étienne Borne). Signed a - Lot 69
SANTO DOMINGO. - DESFOURNEAUX (Edme-Étienne Borne). Signed apostille (2 lines, early 1799) on an autograph piece signed "le chef d'administration Besson" (Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, frimaire an VII-november or december 1798, 2 pp. 1/2 in-folio). PROCLAMATION OF A GUADELOUPÉAN REVOLUTIONARY "TO THE REPUBLICANS OF THE WIND ISLANDS", CALLING FOR INSURRECTION AGAINST THE FRENCH TROUPS OF SAINT DOMINGUE, AND TO SUPPORT VICTOR HUGUES, "this immortal patriot of one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three, rightly the enemy of the Constitution of the year three [organizing the Directory]: "Let's give him back his authority, stab the leader of those treacherous men sent to us by the tirans, and we will be sure of victory. "The author of this address also deplores at length the French political situation, which he considers counter-revolutionary, accuses the Directors of corruption ("Love of the fatherland is replaced by the thirst for gold"), and reproaches the deputies for being cowards, also attacking Talleyrand and Sieyès. He worries about Guadeloupe: "Already the complete loss of S[ain]t-Domingue is the work of the men in whom this corrupt government had placed its trust... More dangerous than were the Chouans & the Vendéens, these men vomited on our beaches will soon have destroyed the prosperity, soon the fatherland will have lost this rich possession. TO ARMS, CITIZENS... " WITH HIS HAND, GENERAL DESFOURNEAUX WROTE IN THE MARGIN: " I HAVE EMBARKED HUGUES AND PA[R]ALISED THE INSURRECTION DIRECTED AGAINST ME ... "In 1794, Victor Hugues, the Commissioner of the Republic in Guadeloupe, charged with restoring order and abolishing slavery, was defeated by the colonists, who were replaced in June 1798 by General Desfourneaux. General Desfourneaux arrived on the island in November 1798 and had to face protests from a large part of the population. He then had Victor Hugues detained on a ship and then forcibly sent him back to Europe.
