Napoleon I. Letter signed "Np" to Pierre-François-Léonard Fo - Lot 62
Napoleon I. Letter signed "Np" to Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine. Paris, March 26, 1815. Mr. Fontaine, I have ordered the Intendant of the Crown [Jean-Pierre Bachasson de Montalivet] to make me a report on the work to be done, but as my intention is not to lose a moment, I AUTHORIZE YOU TO RETURN TOMORROW THE WORKSHOPS OF THE NEW GALLERY AND EXTERNAL WORKS OF THE LOUVRE INTO ACTIVITY TOMORROW. Employ the number of workmen necessary to spend two hundred thousand francs per month and this independently of the workmen you will employ for the demolition of the houses that belong to me on the Musical Ride. If it were possible, I would even want to demolish my stables: but is it possible to replace them? "PRIVILEGED ARCHITECT OF NAPOLÉON I, P.-F.-L. FONTAINE (1762-1853) profoundly marked the style of the imperial period with his colleague Charles Percier. He was first employed by Pauline Bonaparte in 1798, then the following year he met Josephine de Beauharnais who entrusted him with the development of the Château de Malmaison. Appointed government architect in 1801, he was then appointed architect of the Louvre and Tuileries palaces in December 1804. His role consisted mainly in designing the layout of the imperial apartments in all the Crown palaces, imagining the decor of the great celebrations of the regime, and advising Napoleon I on the major architectural achievements of the State. He left an important Diary. A BEAUTIFUL SIGNATURE WITH A BROAD AND NERVOUS GESTURE.
