METTERNICH (Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von). Letter signe - Lot 57
METTERNICH (Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von). Letter signed, in French, to Prince Ludwig von Starhemberg. Florence, July 5, 1817. 1 p. 1/2 in-folio. MARRIAGE OF ARCHDUCHESS LEOPOLDINE WITH DOM PEDRO, CROWN PRINCE OF PORTUGAL AND BRAZIL. The Prince of Metternich was to accompany the Austrian princess to the port of Livorno to hand her over to the Portuguese delegation. "The Count of Mercy [the diplomat Andreas Florimund von Mercy, Aulic adviser attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs] has submitted to me the letter which you have done him the honour of writing to him, asking him to instruct you on my march in order to regulate you accordingly. I am not going to Rome, because the state of health of the Holy Father does not permit him to attend to business, and we are moreover awaiting the arrival of the Portuguese squadron, which according to the latest news from Lisbon on June 7 was to set sail at the first favourable wind, so I flatter myself that the handover will be able to take place between the 15th and 20th of this month. If you wish to come at that time, either here or in Livorno, I shall be delighted to see you there, but as I have no reason to call you there, this trip would be at your own expense, and therefore might be inconvenient for you. I propose, instead, my Prince, to meet you in Mantua, where I intend to pass by on my return, and to call you there even if it is convenient for you. You would then be allowed to charge for the journey you make there... »
