MÉHÉE DE LA TOUCHE (Jean-Claude Hippolyte). Autograph letter - Lot 56
MÉHÉE DE LA TOUCHE (Jean-Claude Hippolyte). Autograph letter signed [to the editors of the Biographie nouvelle des contemporains]. S.l., ca. 1820. 2 pp. in-4, private collector's mark, marginal manuscript mention scratched off. Interesting letter in which he complains of having "become for 25 years the object of a persecution of which written slander has been the means", that is to say of having been defamed by all the authors of biographical dictionaries published, in particular by the Michaud brothers. He asserts that for thirty years he has always published a thought in accordance with the principles of freedom, and asks the authors to question their collaborator, the writer Antoine-Vincent Arnault, on his behalf. JOURNALIST AND SPIRIT, MÉHÉE DE LA TOUCHE (1760-1826) directed several periodicals and, as a police informer before 1789, he worked for the Revolution, notably as secretary to the Commune during the September massacres and as secretary to two ministers. He then joined forces with Napoleon Bonaparte, but played a double game with the English.
