BONAPARTE (Louis). 2 letters, one signed... - Lot 12 - Osenat
BONAPARTE (Louis). 2 letters, one signed and the other autographed, addressed to the writer Jacques Lablée. 1798. LETTERS OF YOUTH INCLUDING 3 POEMS. Paris, 14 nivôse [an VI-3 January 1798]: "My brother received your charming accrostiche. He asked me to thank you. When it will be a question of speaking to him about your desire, I will do it with pleasure but you must necessarily ask for something.... The same goes for your plan to go to Italy. Which employee would you like to work there? As I know a lot about Italy, I can strongly recommend you. Tell me when your next issue will be published [Jacques Lablée was the director of the Journal des Muses]. The newspapers there announce The Forest of Windsort translated by Pope by Boisjoilin [Alexander Pope and Jacques François Marie Vieilh de Boisjolin], which they say is a very good piece... "There follow 2 quatrains of Louis Bonaparte's invention, entitled "Bouts-rimés sur un boudoir" and "Au c[itoyen] Lablée amant de l'Italie. Epigram" (2 pp. in-12). -- Paris], "ce 19 nivôse" [year VI-8 January 1798]. "I send to c[itoyen] Lablée more verses, but in these I believe that two vowels do not collide as in one of the preceding ones. However, I hope that C[itoyen] Lablée will have grasped the idea of the poet & will have realized that the word forgetfulness was really put there by distraction & that it was delirious that it was necessary. C[itoyen] Lablée must be astonished that I dare to submit such convalescent verses to him. I intend to have the honour of seeing him & then I will explain to him why I dare. Will the 7th issue of [Diary of the Muses] be published soon? The Forest of Windsort is spoken of with praise. Will it be published soon ? "The poem in question, entitled "To a cheeky 16-year-old girl," has 6 quatrains: "May spring bring a happy return, / Chase away your indolence forever, / Iris, the pleasures without love / Make innocence cold...
