ARRIGHI DE CASANOVA (Jean-Thomas). 2 autograph... - Lot 2 - Osenat
ARRIGHI DE CASANOVA (Jean-Thomas). 2 autograph letters signed to the count of Survilliers [JOSEPH BONAPARTE]. 1834 and 1835. S.l., "Tuesday, January 17" [1834]: "THE G[ÉNÉRA]L BERTRAND, TO WHOM I HAVE MAKED ME FEEL IT MUST WRITE TO MRS. [LETIZIA BONAPARTE] AND MOTIVATE HIS REFUSAL TO DELIVER THE WEAPONS, has brought me the enclosed letter for her... I think the best thing to do is to approach the House to offer the arms that c[om]te B[ertrand] has on deposit . ." (1 p. in-8). -- Paris, 24 February [1835]. "General Bertrand has asked me to send you the enclosed ... I have sent him your letter which will make an impression, no doubt, but will not, I think, produce the effect you expect from it, a catholic and positive reply. I would have liked yours to have been more positive about Her Ladyship's orders... The newspapers will keep you informed of the various ministerial crises... "(1 p. in-4, address on the back). AFTER DISPUTES ABOUT THE NAPOLEON GUNS I. In 1821, the emperor had bequeathed his arms to his son, but Austria refused to allow them to be handed over to his son, and they remained in the possession of Louis Joseph Marchand, one of the executors of his will. After the death of the Duke of Reichstadt in 1832, a long controversy arose between Grand Marshal Bertrand and the Bonaparte family as to whether the arms should be returned to the Bonapartes, Marie-Louise (and thus Austria) or the French authorities. On 4 June 1840, a few months before the return of the ashes, Bertrand finally came to hand over the imperial sword to Louis-Philippe I, provoking indignant protests from Joseph and Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. COUSIN OF NAPOLÉON IER WHO FIT DUC DE PADOUE IN 1808, GENERAL ARRIGHI DE CASANOVA was charged by the Bonaparte family, absent from French territory, to defend its interests.
