ROYAL FAMILY OF DENMARK Rare gift box containing twelve small covered pots in Mennecy porcelain with flower decoration and fruit shape. Mark in hollow DV for Duchy of Villeroy. 18th century. (Small spalling) Height : 8.5 cm And two silver displays bearing the coat of arms of the Royal family of Denmark. Goldsmith's mark Aucoc. 19th century. Presented in a posterior box. Dimensions : L :62 x W :41 x H :18 cm. History : Diplomatic present offered in 1898 by the Duke and Duchess of Orleans to the princely couple of Denmark, future King Christian X, in Cannes. Provenance : Estate of Elisabeth of Denmark. Private collection. Biography : Christian X (in Danish : Christian 10 af Danmark og Island ) born September 26th 1870 at Charlottenlund Palace near Copenhagen - died April 20th 1947 at Amalienborg Castle. Was King of Denmark from 14 May 1912 to 20 April 1947, and of Iceland from 1918 to 1944. Family reunions during the summer months brought to Denmark the main rulers of Europe (apart from the Kaiser, the Duchy War, which had caused Denmark to lose a large part of its territory, having left deep scars on the Danish soul). Christian X reigned during the two world wars but despite his close ties with the European monarchs, he was able to remain neutral while welcoming his great-aunt the Dowager Czarina in exile. He was credited with resisting the Nazis, making him one of the most popular Danish monarchs in modern monarchy. On 26 April 1898, Christian X of Denmark married Princess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1879-1952), daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Francis III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in Cannes.
