Gilded wooden frame with palmettes and harps. Size : 55 x 44 cm. With frame : 63 x 53 cm. Provenance : Collection Jean-Marc AGOTANI Biography : Simon GAY de VERNON (1760-1822) He studied at the seminary of Limoges then at the Royal School of Engineering of Mézières (class of 1780). With the rank of Adjutant General, he fought in the Army of the Rhine under the orders of General Custine (1792-1793) and, after the capture of Mainz, fortified this place with Engineer Colonel Clément, until the siege of Mainz (1793) temporarily put an end to the French presence in the Rhineland. In 1798, having reached the rank of colonel, he was appointed professor of fortifications at the Ecole Polytechnique. In 1812, he was recalled to the active army. Napoleon entrusted him with the command of the fortress of Torgau, on the Elbe line. Besieged by the Prussians, he handed over the keys of the place after fierce resistance, and was able to withdraw to France on his word. The First Restoration raised him to the rank of Camp Marshal and Knight of Saint-Louis. We owe his son the first biography of his friend the Marshal of Gouvion Saint-Cyr.
