Sèvres Two figures in hard porcelain bisque... - Lot 259 - Osenat
Sèvres Two figures in hard porcelain bisque representing Urania and Zenon the Stoic, each end on a square terrace, holding their tunic in their left hand and a scroll in their right, the bases bearing the inscription URANIA and ZENON in hollowed-out form. Marks incised on the reverse: Urania: A.B. 2 Jt TZ o.g. for Alexandre Brachard, July 2, 1813 and Oger, Zeno: A.B. 9 Dec TZ for Alexandre Brachard, December 9, 1813, stamp of the manufactory in hollow. Empire period, 1813. H. 36.5 cm. These two figures are the same models as the figures made for the Emperor's Private Service, also called the Service des Quartiers Généraux, made from 1808 and delivered on March 27, 1810 on the occasion of the wedding of Napoleon and Marie Louise in April 1810. The service of the Headquarters consisted of a bisque surtout composed of the chariot of the Geniuses of Arts pulled by horses, two antique tripods, two antique candelabra, two seats of Bacchus and sixteen figures from the antiques of the Napoleon Museum. Alexandre Brongniart, director of the Sèvres manufactory, and Dominique Vivant-Denon choose together the antique sculptures in the Napoleon Museum which serve as models except for the chariot, created by the sculptor Moutoni. Two drawings, dated 1809, are kept in the archives of the Sèvres manufactory. The architect Théodore Brongniart, father of the director of the manufactory, received 100 francs for these drawings. The figure of the Greek philosopher Zenon of Elée, a disciple of Parmenides, was copied by the sculptor Pierre Petitot (1760-1840) from the original brought from the Roman Museum of the Capitol in 1797 where he left in 1815. The figure of the Muse Uranie is copied by Nicolas-Augustin Matte (1781-1837) from an antique from the royal collections still in the national collections today. The Emperor's special service accompanied by the "surtout" was first deployed on 2 April 1810 on the occasion of the Grand Couvert during the wedding celebration of Napoleon
