Sèvres Two porcelain plates decorated in the center with antique cameo style profiles in medallions with a nankin background surrounded by purple and green palmettes, the wing with a pale blue background decorated with garlands of foliage and pearls. Legendary profiles: Gladiator and Aesculapius. Marked : LL interlaced, fleur-de-lis, Sèvres 21. Restoration period, 1821. D. 23.5 cm. These two plates are part of the service "pale blue background, coloured ornaments, camayeux heads", which entered the Sèvres manufactory's sales shop in December 1822 and was delivered on 25 March 1826 on the order of the Viscount of La Rochefoucault to the "Viscount of Marcellus, Extraordinary envoy, Minister Plenipotentiary of H.M. the Very Christian H.R.H. the Du of Lucca". Lodoïs de Martin du Tyrac de Marcellus (1795-1861) led a career as a diplomat, which was decisive in ensuring the security of the arrival in France of the Venus de Milo in 1820 when he served in the French Embassy in Constantinople. Six plates from this service have recently gone on sale (Sotheby's Paris, 4 June 2020, lot 212).
