Antonio CANOVA (1757-1822), after The Princess... - Lot 196 - Osenat
Antonio CANOVA (1757-1822), after The Princess Pauline Borghese with the antique alabaster Sculpture. Length 39.5 x Width 19 x Height 58 cm. B.E. 19th century. (Small splinters). 400/500 € History: Commissioned by Camille Borghese, Pauline Bonaparte's second husband, it was sculpted from 1805 to 1808. Characteristic of the neoclassical style of the sculptor, the work caused a scandal because of the rumour that the princess had posed naked for the sculpture. She was one of the most beautiful women of her time. Executed in Rome, the statue then moved to the Camillo House in Turin, then to Genoa before arriving at its present residence around 1838. The room in which the sculpture is exhibited at the Galleria Borghese also has a painted ceiling depicting the scene of Mount Ida, painted by Domenico de Angelis in 1779 and inspired by a famous relief on the façade of the Villa Medici. Pauline Borghese is also said to have posed for the Galatea of which A. Canova is also the author, a statue which is in the Demidoff museum in San Martino (north of Florence) and a copy in the Mulini garden (Elba Island).
