AUDENARDE (Flanders) The death of the Roman Emperor Valens a - Lot 335
AUDENARDE (Flanders) The death of the Roman Emperor Valens at the Battle of Andrinople Important broad-bordered tapestry with jars and medallions of stylised fruit and flowers Early 17th century 300 x 230 cm (restorations) Note: The Roman Emperor Valens died on 9 August 378 BC.It refers to the confrontation between the Roman army commanded by the Roman Emperor Valens and the Visigoths (Thervingian Goths) led by Fritigern and Alaviv and the Ostrogoths (Greuthungues Goths). Although weakened by misery and famine, they severely defeated the Roman army (one of the greatest military disasters in the history of Rome). This battle is considered by some historians as the origin of the decline of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century.
