History : Jean Baptiste, born in 1751 June at the Château de Beaulieu Mareil, was the son of Jean Philippe de GRATEREAU (died in 1784), Lord of the Groges and Anne Radegonde de Marcillac. The whole family, coming from the Charente region, emigrated to Russia during the French Revolution. The spelling of the name is extremely variable as it is sometimes called "des Graulges". He was a light-haired man of the House of the King. His wife since 1789, Madame de la Vauguyon née Jourdain de Boitillé in 1759, is mentioned on the pension list of the former civil list in 1833, due to loss of fortune. If Winterhalter's work has greatly inspired miniaturists, and if Winterhalter was the pupil of a miniaturist, Stieler, there would be no miniature that can be attributed to Franz Xaver Winterhalter (cf Nathalie Lemoine Bouchard, "La lettre de la Miniature, 2012).
