Italian school circa 1800, entourage of Giovanni... - Lot 20 - Osenat
Italian school circa 1800, entourage of Giovanni Zoffoli (1745-1805) Marc-Aurèle Equestrian bronze statuette with brown patina H.: 37.5 cm Resting on a green marble base: H.: 7 cm Related literature: -F. Haskell, N. Penny, Pour l'amour de l'antique, la statuaire gréco-romaine et le goût européen, Paris, Hachette, 1988. This is a reduction of the famous equestrian statue in Rome's Piazza del Campidoglio. The work has been known and documented since the 10th century and is one of the most important statues of antiquity to have survived unburied. The monument has been widely copied and studied since the 15th century and especially at the end of the 18th century. Thus, artists, amateurs and collectors on the Grand Tour were looking for reproductions of Marcus Aurelius in bronze, plaster, cameos or intaglios. Around 1800, the best Roman foundries presented in their lists and catalogues beautiful bronze reductions that were very popular with amateurs. Our Marcus Aurelius can be found at Francesco Righetti (1738-1819) or Giovanni Zoffoli (1745-1805). It is particularly from the work of the latter that our bronze is the closest, the casting is meticulous and the chiselling and cold restorations are abundant and detailed.
