Pierre Gabriel BERTHAULT, attributed to. French school of the end of the 18th century. "Charge of the Prince de Lambesc and the Royal German in the gardens des Tuileries, July 12, 1789". Pen and wash project, made on the back of an engraving by the same author "Vue". of the Field of Mars on the 14th of July, at the time of the confederate oath of office." 46 x 33 cm. Framed under glass. A.B.E. Historical background: This drawing presents one of the first popular movements in Paris, two days before the capture of the city... of the Bastille. After Necker's dismissal, Camille Desmoulins calls for an insurrection against the government, leading to a mob meeting in the Place Louis XV and in the Tuileries gardens. The Prince de Lambesc will disperse the crowd by charging. He will be falsely accused of having slit the throat of a old man. Our drawing shows exactly the Tuileries swing bridge (destroyed in 1817) as well as the two sculptures by Coysevox, copies of which are still in the same locations today. Related work: The Carnival Museum's collection includes the Federation Day carving, unfortunately anonymous.
